ABSTRACT

This chapter address the core challenges of collaborating across academic divisions such as humanities and science, bridging academic and community practices, and translating between the diverse stakeholders involved in these projects. It describes creating the multidisciplinary School of Arts and Communication, which was founded on the idea of creating a school to which teachers and researchers came precisely because they wanted to work multi- or trans-disciplinary. Collaborations across disciplines also take much more time and energy than working alone. A good way to find collaborators in other disciplines is to invite them to transdisciplinary workshops or into research project collaborations. Translating scholarly practice into public dialogue requires that one be in ongoing conversation with members of the public or community. Translating scholarly knowledge into public dialogue obviously is not a challenge specific to applied media work. This means being present and visible in the community, attending meetings and events, and participating in activities.
