ABSTRACT

The transitional nature of climate systems plays a fundamental role in the distribution of flora and fauna across Jordan. The Jordan Plateau is located within a climatic transition zone between hyperarid North Africa and the more temperate western Asia and Europe. The Jordan Plateau, east of the Dead Sea Transform (DST) fault, holds a vital place in regional environmental history. Flora from four phytogeographic zones—Saharo Arabian, Sudano Deccanian, Mediterranean, and Irano Turanian—characterizes the region. Fauna are equally diverse and this likely influenced greatly the patterns of very early hunters and gatherers across the plateau.
