ABSTRACT

The Jordan Antiquities Database Information System (JADIS) is unique in the Middle East. Unlike project or site-specific databases, JADIS aspires to contain site and project metadata for all the cultural resources in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. JADIS was designed, first and foremost, as a cultural resource management (CRM) tool, providing basic information about archaeological sites, their condition, and their research priority. As a national-scale database, the system currently outstrips any other in the Middle East, and is a resource that the people of Jordan can be justifiably proud of. By using JADIS in a proactive way, the Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DOA) can take steps to safeguard, investigate, interpret, and preserve Jordan’s rich archaeological heritage. This article presents a summary of the development of the JADIS system, its current state, and prospects for its future.
