ABSTRACT

Education is conducted in a definite social context, since it is part of the social system. Hence, it forms an intimate and inseparable relation with society. On the one hand, education needs support from every sector of society, and it is therefore constrained by society; on the other hand, education, in turn, reacts to the social environment and has an impact on the political, economic, and cultural development of society. The author of the well-known UNESCO document Learning to Be points out that it is not impossible for education to stimulate social changes in direct ways, if people have a clear image of society and set educational objectives in accordance with this image (Committee of International Education Development, 1978:97). This remark highlights the impact of education on society and leads to reflection on the importance of educational objectives.
