Working Americans, Increasingly “the anxious class,” are now on a “downward escalator” according to Labor Secretary Robert Reich. As real wages and incomes fall, our anxiety is heightened, some argue, by a growing “representation gap”—a lack of voice in the economic and political arenas as well as in the workplace.
