ABSTRACT
There are certain obvious weaknesses that I bring to a discussion of democratization in Russia. Except for what I read in the newspapers and what I have been able to glean from essays such as those collected in this volume, I know little about Russia or its Soviet Union predecessor. I have never visited the country and certainly do not speak the language. So, the reader might well ask, what is a political scientist like you doing in a book like this?
