ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide the historical and geographical context in which the present migration from Hong Kong should be viewed. Just as migration is not new from Hong Kong, so too is emigration a characteristic of other parts of the East Asian region. The chapter begins with an outline of the evolution of migration from Hong Kong. Comparisons and contrasts are drawn between previous generations of migrants and current movers. The factors influencing the migration are examined, with particular attention being given to the policies of destination countries. The patterns and composition of present and future flows are then discussed in relation to movements from other parts of Asia.
