ABSTRACT
Five sovereign nations emerged in Central Asia from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Despite their varying degrees of adherence to the Commonwealth of Independent States, all five have demonstrated a strong sense of independence and a determination to pursue their own interests free of outside direction.
