ABSTRACT
Now that the old USSR has collapsed as a result of the dramatic developments culminating in the coup of August 1991, important questions arise about the international implications of the tumultuous changes in that former country. What course will the Muslim republics take? How will their evolution affect the Muslim factor in the volatile politics of the southern rim of the Eurasian continent?
