ABSTRACT
The most popular and most widely acclaimed work of traditional Chinese prose fiction had several names given to it even as it had existed in many manuscript versions (none containing more than eighty chapters) prior to its formal publication, in movable type, in 1791–92 as a novel of 120 chapters. The variety of its titles and the vicissitudes of its textual history constitute part of what continues to intrigue the readers of this unusual narrative.
