ABSTRACT
Against the background of the ending of the Cold War and the emergence of Japan as an economic superpower, that country has been searching for a more independent and active foreign policy. Nowhere is this more apparent than in relations with Korea, where Japan's attempt to redefine its policy seems to be a testing ground for the search for a new role in Asia and throughout the world.
