ABSTRACT

On November 26,1982, Nakasone Yasuhiro became prime minister of Japan. Three elections brought him to this position. First was a party primary: It made him one of two candidates to lead the ruling party, the Liberal Democratic party. Next was a runoff: It made him the sosai (top leader). Third was a vote in the national assembly, the Diet: In its chambers, the LDP Dietmen transformed their sosai into the prime minister.
