ABSTRACT

All working women and men struggle at one time or another to balance their private lives with their careers. Family arid job obligations frequently conflict and are compounded by gender stereotypes characteristic of our culture. Traditionally we think of the female executive wrestling with this problem; it is important to remember, however, that many men are also juggling competing responsibilities. This chapter examines the relationship between the private and public lives of working women and men and offers suggestions for policy changes that would ease those pressures.
