ABSTRACT
The profit maximizing firm is derived from the rational utility maximizing individual for whom more consumption and more leisure are the sole elements of individual motivation. Higher productivity at work is desired since it gives individuals higher incomes to buy more consumption goods and the ability to reduce work effort to obtain more leisure without sacrificing consumption. But work is a disutility tolerated solely because it provides the economic resources needed for consumption.
