ABSTRACT
By presenting a probably fictive letter from "a writer friend in Peking" (quite possibly it is a creative amalgam of several such letters), Zhang Xinxin here makes yet another contribution to the always fluid genre of "reportage literature." This piece, announced as the first in a series, was written in the United States for publication in Taibei and Hong Kong.
