ABSTRACT

Huang Chunming's stones "Shayonala, zaijian" (Sayonara, goodbye) and "Pingguo de ziwei" (The taste of apples), collected in Sayonara, Goodbye (1977), are burlesque treatments of average Taiwanese and their reservations about Americans and Japanese who might seek to "re-occupy" the island. Huang's oeuvre has remained comparatively small, but parts of it, compiled by the author himself in three volumes, have been successfully rendered into film versions under his own directorship. Inspired translations of his stories by Howard Goldblatt have won the author an international audience.
