ABSTRACT

Huang Fan originally became famous for his dandified and rather cynical story "Lai Suo" (1979), about irresponsibility among the leaders of the opposition fighting for Taiwan Independence. Having worked several years for Taiwan's United Daily News trust, he exhibits in his essays and journalistic work a remarkable knowledge of the social and economic dynamism of the island, and indeed he has lately become a successful real estate broker. Readers overseas find the social references in his fiction complex, but the major newspapers of Taiwan have awarded him nearly every prize at their disposal.
