Profits and Wages in an Open Economy

The capitalist class, Karl Marx observed, cannot make profits by exploiting itself; profits arise not because capitalists buy cheap and sell dear but because they pay labor less than its net product. The secret of profit making, Marx insisted, could be found through the study of class relations in production and in labor markets, not exchange relations in goods markets.
