ABSTRACT

East Asian societies continue to become more important, both as practical participants in the global economy and as comparative cases for theorists of economic and political development. Developed countries wonder where their industries have gone, developing countries wonder whence their industries will come. Among developed countries, Japan threatens to assume the lead in technology-intensive industries. Among developing economies, China threatens to appropriate a large share of labor-intensive industries. Development economists wonder whether there is room in the global economy for more “newly industrialized countries” Political economists debate the relationship between economic development and authoritarian politics.
