ABSTRACT

Pradeep Bandyopadhyay explores some distinctions and similarities between Marxist and Neo-Ricardian (or what he has termed Post-Sraffa Marxist) paradigms. Bandyopadhyay claims that Marx's theoretical dilemma (as outlined by Neo-Ricardians) concerns the level of analysis and depictions of the source of surplus value. He offers the Sraffian theory of value as the answer. But unlike Steedman, Bandyopadhyay suggests that the inclusion of Marx's understanding of capitalist production—especially the dynamics of the social relations of production—in the Post-Sraffa approach is not only possible but desirable. He argues for the Post-Sraffian's concern with the political struggle over distribution, not merely the technical aspects of the determination of prices, profit, and value.
