ABSTRACT

The rise of the corporation as the dominant institution in our culture is the subject of Dugger's article. His argument makes the following points. Corporate culture is hegemonic and has subverted other social institutions (meaning social structures) to its goals. This is the source of the continued growth of corporate power, a power exercised by social institutions, not individuals. When individuals exercise power, they are able to do so because of their position within a social hierarchy and not because of any personal efficacy. Dugger notes the loss of independence by other social institutions and the decline of institutional pluralism. Dugger has extended his analysis in more recent writings (see suggested readings at the end of this section) which point to the consequences of this process.
