ABSTRACT

The question of change in post-war Japanese democracy greatly interests political scientists, sociologists, historians, cultural anthropologists, and psychologists. The post-war period can be divided into two phases: the phase of post-war democracy and the phase of high economic growth. Japan has become a great economic power, it becomes very important to analyse as accurately as possible the special characteristics of Japanese society, the roots of post-war democracy, and the special societal characteristics of economic superpower Japan. Many Japanese youth thought must build an equal society, irrespective of how poor the economy might be, as well as a politically free and democratic society. Many Japanese youth made positive efforts to rebuild Japan after the war. The high-growth economy of Japan which began in the 1960s created a new state completely different in quality from the Japanese state during or immediately after the war.
