ABSTRACT
The strategy of acceleration and the fundamental renovation of all sides of life demands even greater solidarity. One of these principles is the guarantee of the free development and legal equality of use by all citizens of the USSR of their native languages, as well as, alongside mastery of the language of one’s nationality, mastery of Russian. An important aspect of the language problem is the adaptation of Russians and other nationalities living in the republic to Latvian. The necessity of the voluntary mastery of Latvian and its use in certain circumstances is conditioned by both rational and emotional demands. The task was set to assist in all manner possible enhancement of the role of the family in introducing a deep interest in and respect for the cultural values, languages, traditions, and customs of the fraternal peoples.
