ABSTRACT

As the main task of its broadcasts to the country the Vatican radio proclaimed the spread of evangelical ideals and the popularization of the Catholic faith. An analysis of the Uniate clerical radio propaganda aimed at believers in the Ukraine shows that it is concerned first of all with falsification of the policies of the CPSU and the Soviet state regarding religion and the Church and with discrediting socialist democracy. Uniate radio saboteurs persistently repeat long-refuted bourgeois nationalist myths about the exceptional religiosity of the Ukrainian people, their natural gravitation to Catholicism, etc. Uniate clericals use the Vatican radio to incite the remnants of the Uniate Church in the Ukraine, provoke former Uniate clergymen, monks and nuns to extremism, and attempt to revive the Uniate Church in the country. Ultraconservatives, on the other hand, have transformed the broadcasts of the “Ukrainian Division,” and indeed some other divisions that are staffed by reactionary emigre clericals, into a mouthpiece of flagrant anticommunism.
