ABSTRACT
China's spectacular rate of economic development over the past two decades has elevated hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty and propelled China into a position of significant stature within the global economy. Yet, as the Chinese leadership focused most immediately on ensuring the continuation of this rapid economic growth, it largely ignored the environmental consequences, leaving behind a legacy of pollution and destruction.
