ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the impacts of China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Chinese agriculture and farmers. China is now at a stage where both industrialization and information technology development are important and coexist side by side. It is important to upgrade China's economic structures that promote the substitution of capital for labor. Two issues are important here: the presence of the rural surplus labor force and a stable macroeconomic situation. The Chinese rural population is not included in the national social security network; therefore they are not calculated into the unemployment statistics. The cash crop producers who are mostly living in the coastal areas are the potential beneficiaries in light of China's membership in the WTO. The most important task for China is to deepen internal reforms and undertake policy adjustments through institutional changes and organizational innovations in order to meet the challenges of globalization.
