ABSTRACT

The “twilight for organized labor” means that I expect unionism in the private sector, hereinafter the “Old Unionism,” will not recover either the membership or the market share it had in the recent or historical past. The term “twilight” does not mean the extinction of private sector unionism; to the contrary, it assumes that private unions will remain a key factor in determining working conditions in several important industrial sectors, notably auto and steel manufacturing, and transportation.
