ABSTRACT
My interest in the subject emerged out of an interest in the sources of technical change. In research initiated in the early 1970s, Yujiro Hayami and I extended the theory of induced technical change and tested it against the history of agricultural development in the United States and Japan (Hayami and Ruttan [1971] 1985; Binswanger et al. 1978).
