ABSTRACT
On October 1, 1949, Mao Zedong mounted Tiananmen in Beijing and declared: “The Chinese people have stood up!” Mao meant this to be a death knell for western imperialism in China. It was also his signal for ushering in a new political culture under the tutelage of the Chinese Communist Party.
