ABSTRACT

One could easily argue that gender equality issues in Jewish halakha were not on the list of important human rights issues of the twentieth century. Blu Greenberg has summarized a series of issues that define the dispute of Orthodox feminists. Blu Greenberg raises important issues, not only for Orthodox women and not only for Jewish orthodoxy, but for the study of religious modernization generally. Orthodoxy in Judaism has always had resources that prevent it from becoming another form of 'fundamentalism. The ability of Orthodox feminist women to make their positions known and understood, and to continue to influence the community and carry on dialogue within it, could make them a force for revitalization and against extremism. The community is extremely sensitive to this issue today, seeking informal accommodations that protect women's rights. But the issue could be better resolved.
