ABSTRACT

A postmodern artist or writer is in the position of a philosopher: the text he writes, the work he produces are not in principle governed by pre-established rules, and they cannot be judged according to a determining judgment, by applying familiar categories to the text or to the work. Under the name of postmodernism, architects are getting rid of the Bauhaus project, throwing out the baby of experimentation with the bathwater of functionalism. The first hypothesis, of a Hegelian inspiration, does not challenge the notion of a dialectically totalizing experience. Another hypothesis is closer to the spirit of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Judgement. It is this critique which not only Wittgenstein and Theodor Adorno have initiated, but also a few other thinkers who do not have the honour to be read by Professor Jrgen Habermas which at least saves them from getting a poor grade for their neo-conservatism.
