Everyone has an idea of what soil is and how it is used. Perhaps the most common perception of soil is that it’s “dirt”—dirt in which people grow things, like flowers in a window box or corn in a field. It’s the stuff that gets our hands dirty-soileddigging in the backyard or playing football in the local park. But what really is soil?
