161 Speaking of his generation, the generation that fought the Civil War, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes remarked, “Through our great good fortune, in our youth, our hearts were touched with fire.” In Holmes and many of his contemporaries, the flame of individualism, a legacy of generations of Americans before them, burned brightly; for them the vehicle of progress remained, as always, individuals.
