ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines initial findings from research undertaken with Zambian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), volunteer peer leaders and other participants in an international sport volunteer social regeneration project. In 2005, London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games and part of the bid included a commitment to create an Olympic legacy throughout the world, not just in the UK. The concept of legacy has been widely used in relation to sport and sport events in recent years. Legacy is not an uncontested term and it can be difficult to identify and assess. Sport for development projects suffer from a lack of understanding of social impacts. Often the concept of legacy is used in relation to one single event. The legacy is difficult to assess within the timescale of just ten years, as it would be better done over a number of decades.
