ABSTRACT

The wife of the deceased, who was herself apparently much indisposed, stated that some weeks ago, she, her husband and four children came to this country from county Sligo in Ireland, having in that time in their possession the sum of £2, the proceeds of their little property previous to their leaving their native country. Having reached Bradford they remained there until after she was confined and the whole of their money expended. The infant and three of the children died in the town of hunger and measles combined. Deceased, his wife and the remaining child afterwards proceeded to Leeds and from thence to York, where they slept in the Vagrant Office one night, the next night in a barn. They applied for admittance into several of the lodging houses but the inmates, thinking they had fever, refused to take them in, saying that the priests and the doctors had told them they were not to admit them.
