ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and exemplifies the influence and impact of various life spaces, such as social media, the cloud, wikis, podcasts, and video-conferencing, by three fictionalised illustrative case studies within different parts of the United Kingdom (UK). In order to provide a framework, the case studies focus on three broad UK age phases, namely preschool, primary/elementary school and compulsory secondary school. The case studies also exemplifies the potential impact of specific 'predictors of children's positive and negative social behaviors' identified by G. S. Ashiabi and K. K. O'Neal, namely: socio-economic status; family and parenting stress; neighbourhood social capital; and parent-child interactions. However, given the rapid pace of change in current society in which 'all social forms melt faster than new ones can be cast', it may be that elements of the microsystem facilitated by advances in technology, and children's increasing agency, may now be beginning to affect the conditions in the macrosystems in the lives of children today.
