ABSTRACT

Cultural diversity became more visible only after the outbreak of the Zapatist rebellion of indigenous people in the south of Mexico in the mid-1990s. In order to understand the cultural situation and the social dynamics of Mexico City, this chapter considers the situation of the country, because most of the migration to the capital city originates from there. During the last centuries, most of the lakes have dried out, which means that a large part of Mexico City is built on the mud ground of the former lakes. The patched character of many neighborhoods in Mexico City reflects the socio-linguistic situation of the city. The multicultural and multilingual character of Mexico City is weakening. Obviously, when considering the many ethnic groups that arrived in the city in the first half of the twentieth century, mostly from rural parts of the country, the city was not only growing in size but also in diversity.
