ABSTRACT

This volume, Philosophies of Multiculturalism: Beyond Liberalism, offers a group of innovative approaches to the topic of multiculturalism. In particular, it puts together perspectives that have been largely neglected as valid normative ways to address the political and moral questions that arise from the coexistence of different cultures in the same geographical space. In this initial introduction, we intend to contextualise the debate of multiculturalism in contemporary political theory and locate this volume within the debate. With this purpose in mind, this chapter is divided into three sections. In the first, we outline our definition of multiculturalism. In section 2, we summarise the debates on multiculturalism within political theory and explain how such debates have centred on a liberal perspective. In the third section, we outline the chapters in this volume.
