ABSTRACT

Institutions of higher education tend to be more complex than many imagine. Rogers University is a regional, mid-sized private institution in a suburban community adjacent to a large metropolitan area in the Northeast. Of the 4,000 undergraduate students, the majority are middle-class and white. Although Rogers is a moderately selective institution, it has struggled to attract a diverse body of students. One area the new president has addressed is the number of students who take advantage of study abroad opportunities. He views study abroad opportunities as transformational experiences that promote cultural awareness and a broader worldview. The university's student abroad programs are developed and housed within the Office of International Students, which reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs at Rogers. Alex Harlow is Rogers' only study abroad advisor and has been charged with increasing efforts to encourage students to study abroad.
