ABSTRACT

The students, faculty, and staff at Reeds University (RU) are predominantly white; however, RU has been working on creating a more diverse student population through admissions efforts and the demographics have begun to change. Recently, the institution has also focused on diversity awareness and education, forming several committees and task forces. The result of these efforts is a new mission statement and strategic goals that emphasize diversity. The first-year orientation program has three spring Saturday programs and four two-day June programs. The June programs include an optional overnight experience followed by the one-day program. The majority of the Orientation Leader (OL) training occurs over a four-day period in June, but there are two OL training sessions in March before the spring programs take place. The first three Orientation programs were successful with no major issues.
