ABSTRACT

Radio station WSB began broadcasting in 1922, and was the South's first station. Its call letters stand for Welcome South, Brother. The WSB Newsfilm Collection at University of Georgia's Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection contains five million feet of 16mm newsfilm—or 69,501 clips—with content spanning 1948 to 1982. Of those 69,501 clips, over 12,000 have been digitized and are viewable online in a database. Digital clips and additional descriptive metadata are added to the database regularly. Digital access to this content has prompted dramatically increased usage of the collection, with requests from high school students, university students, professors, the general public, and documentarians. In 1995, the Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection was officially created as part of the University of Georgia Libraries, and beginning with the Peabody Awards Archives, University film and video holdings were gradually migrated into the new unit.
