ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book outlines a framework of person living with dementia's involvement in research. It looks at social research methods that develop participatory and visual media. The book draws upon an existing study to provide an overview of the benefits of the walking interview, as opposed to the traditional sit-down interview, and the opening up of sensory experiences. It explores the use of naturally occurring data during interactions between social workers and people living with dementia when the focus is on assessment and decision-making. The book provides an in-depth outline about Deaf British Sign Language users who are living with dementia and how their signed stories were shared with a wider hearing audience using an approach to re-presentation of data based around cultural brokering. It also looks at the application and innovation of social research methods in dementia studies.
