ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the use of videography as a data collection tool within an ESRC funded study exploring the role of appearance in the lives of people living with dementia, particularly through the lens of care-based hairdressing services, colloquially known as 'The Hair and Care Project'. The primary aim of the Hair and Care Project was to understand the value of care-based hairdressing in people's lives and to describe, and explore, the care-based hair salon and the role of care-based hairdressers. The chapter illustrates the ways in which the use of film for data collection and analysis can bring a level of detail and insight that is hard to equal with other forms of data collection. A great benefit of using film to capture data was in how it enabled researchers to include participants who were more advanced in their dementia and no longer used verbal language to communicate.
