ABSTRACT

This chapter considers contemporary frameworks that are guiding program focus and practices in early intervention. At least four trends and issues have shaped contemporary program foci and practices in early intervention: early childhood systems integration efforts; diversity of children and families served; developmentally appropriate and recommended practices; and curricular frameworks and accountability for child and family outcomes. The chapter discusses promising promotion, prevention, and intervention or multi-tiered frameworks and associated practices, which are designed to support and accelerate the growth and learning of young children in inclusive early learning settings. It describes tiered frameworks as approaches used to organize evidence-based interactional and instructional practices and to inform decisions about what, when, and how supports and interventions are provided for young children. The chapter concludes with discussing controversies and future trends associated with tiered frameworks in the context of implementation science and adaptive interventions.
