ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the application of gaming elicitation in the context of episodic interviews related to playing the baptism scene in the game BioShock Infinite. It aims to answer the question: How do actors perceive religious symbols and practices, specifically rituals in video gaming, and are there reservations about rituals within video games? Kerstin Radde-Antweiler presents and discusses gaming elicitation as a method for narrative interviews that intends to activate narrative storytelling within the respective interview. In addition, gaming elicitation helps the interview become more interactive between the interviewer and the interviewee(s). It uses elements from a game (e.g., videos of the gameplay). Its benefit for the study of gaming and religion is the possibility of triggering and collecting narrations on religion and gaming. This is of particular interest, since religion is mostly a sensitive issue that actors do not always wish to talk about explicitly.
