ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe the Static-99 Revised (Static-99R; Hanson & Thornton, 1999; Helmus et al., 2012), an empirically based sexual recidivism risk assessment tool based on historical (static) factors. We describe its utility in assessing sex offence recidivism potential with adult men who have committed sexual offences, and we note its limitations. We refer to research that updates the scoring of the original Static-99 as well as updating the applicable normative information, including standardized nominal risk levels that are less idiosyncratic to the instrument than the original levels. We offer suggestions for the application of the instrument with respect to target populations, timeframes, and appropriate training. The chapter concludes with a case illustration.
