ABSTRACT

In the last fifteen years or so the role of writing within the disciplines has been the focus of a plethora of studies in fields like business (e.g. Annous and Nicolas, 2015; Hyland, 2011; Zhang, 2013; Zhu, 2004a), engineering (e.g. Curry, 2014; Gimenez, 2014; Gimenez and Thondhlana, 2012), health sciences (Gimenez, 2012; Smith et al., 2011), and the arts (Borg, 2004; Thomas, 2013), among others. This growing body of research has demonstrated, inter alia, that an examination of writing in the context where it occurs is essential to understand the role it plays in creating, reaffirming and consolidating disciplinary values and ideologies (Gimenez, 2012, 2014).
