ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to survey the origins of scientific and technical translation and presents an overview of the major theoretical and practical works in the Spanish-speaking world. The overview of research in the field highlights the specific topics being studied and reflects the current tendencies in scientific and technical translation. In Spanish-speaking countries, ranging from the Spain of Maimónides to the Argentina of Etcheverry, scientific and technical translation into Spanish has always had a high demand. The use of translation in healthcare settings has been particularly productive. A number of specialists dealing with medical translation have focused on the mistakes and terminological difficulties linked to the field. In the theoretical part of the work, Congost Maestre deals on the one hand with scientific and technical translation, and on the other with a pragmatic view of scientific and technical translation applied to medical language.
