ABSTRACT

Once learning objectives are established for a course, there are many decisions to be made. This chapter includes an overview of how to choose assignments, select a textbook and supplemental readings, and determine an appropriate modality of delivery (face to face, online, hybrid). Once these decisions are made, the syllabus can serve as a vehicle to communicate the course expectations and as a guide to the instructor as much as a guide to the class. The syllabus also functions as a means to communicate the teacher’s philosophy of teaching, expectations of students, and responsibilities of learner and instructor. Therefore, this chapter includes how the syllabus is both a professional document and a personal document that reflects the instructor’s feelings, attitudes, and beliefs about the subject matter, teaching, learning, and students, as well as setting out the “nuts and bolts” of the course.
