ABSTRACT

In a 2008 essay titled “The End of Neoliberalism?” economist Joseph Stiglitz strained to put a positive spin on the future prospects for a global economy that was then sliding toward what looked to be a horrible precipice. He wrote:

Neoliberal market fundamentalism was always a political doctrine serving certain interests. It was never supported by economic theory. Nor, it should now be clear, is it supported by historical experience. Learning this lesson may be the silver lining in the cloud now hanging over the global economy.
